Project Name/Type: Water Governance Assessment and Water Use Authorisation, including WULA and IWWMP
Client: Highveld Industrial Park
Location: Mpumalanga Province, South Africa
In Association with: NA
Completed: 2019
Categories: water governance and water use licensing, water use assessment, and water use license applications (WULAs)
Description:

CBSS was contracted by Highveld Industrial Park to evaluate their water governance aspects, including the drafting of a WULA and IWWMP.

The site is located approximately 15 km east of Witbank, on the watershed between the B11K and B20G quarternary catchments, in an interesting and complex geological, hydrological, and socio-economic setting.

The Project is conducted in three phases: Phase 1 has been completed, and was aimed at identifying all water uses as described in section 21 of the NWA that take place at Highveld, as well as determining any information gaps that need to be addressed in order to establish the type of authorisation that is required for each identified water use.

Phase 2 is currently underway, and entails the preparation of the Integrated Water and Waste Management Planin support of the Water Use License Amendment application (WULAA). This Phase inter alia entails conducting a source-pathway-receptor evaluation to determine the significance of risks for which management and monitoring measures have to be implemented.

Phase 3 of the Project will commence shortly, and will entail the preparation and submission of the WULAA to the authorities.
